Starting out in PR? Here’s some things you should know first

Public relations is a dynamic and exciting industry, and it is becoming more important than ever for businesses to showcase a strong personal image online and in the media.

To achieve this, PR professionals need to apply their skills in communication and creativity to promote positive coverage which aligns with a business’ narrative and voice.

However, getting your foot in the door in such a competitive sector may seem daunting initially, so what can you do to kickstart your PR career I hear you ask…

What essential skills do you need for a PR career?

Launching a career in PR begins with developing a strong set of transferable skills that can carry you across different roles and industries. From communicating with clarity and confidence, to spotting compelling content and tailoring your writing style, these abilities are essential in this fast-moving field. You can build these skills by analysing successful brand campaigns and practicing how to tailor messaging for different audiences and platforms.

Just as important, however, is discovering what genuinely interests you. Whether it’s media outreach, brand messaging, crisis comms or social media strategy, discovering your passion encourages ambition and growth. Enthusiasm, initiative and a willingness to adapt are essential in navigating an industry that consistently requires energy and flexibility.

How to get involved in the world of PR

In the fast-paced world of PR, staying updated on the latest news and technologies is necessary to succeed. Keeping up with the industry’s trends helps tailor effective communication to resonate with your client’s audience. To keep on top of this:

  • Stay informed: Being on top of current affairs is vital to a successful PR career. Make sure you’re staying up to date with national news by reading the papers, listening to the radio, or tuning in to your preferred TV news channel. Also look at industry publications and niche blogs – start with a topic you’re personally interested in. The Chartered Institute of Public Relations blog is great for tips and advice for new PR pros, and even has a podcast, while PR Daily has an online blog and actively posts updates on LinkedIn also.
  • Strengthen your online presence: Social media platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram offer invaluable opportunities to connect with potential employers and display your expertise and passion, while engaging with their company’s content. This offers a first impression of you to companies as well as when you’re in an interview, so it’s important to make it count! You can also see what opportunities other budding professionals are using to garner experience and exposure to the world of PR.
  • Networking events: Attend industry events, such as the Pearl Comms Academy, to establish initial connections with professionals and those also looking to begin their careers. Just one day of networking can unveil insightful industry tips and provide you with a comprehensive understanding of what employers are looking for, how to succeed in developing campaigns, and so much more!

Taking your first steps

Deciding where you want to apply for a job in PR means making some key decisions early on, starting with whether agency life or an in-house role suits your strengths and interests. Understanding the difference helps you target your search: agencies offer variety and pace, while in-house positions fully own the communications function, working closely with leadership and stakeholders.

From there, a direct approach can go a long way. Reaching out confidently to companies via email and LinkedIn who are hiring shows initiative and drive. Tailoring each outreach to reflect the company’s image, tone and recent work also demonstrates genuine interest and diligence. A business wants to understand why you are the best candidate so pitch yourself and your capabilities to match their values.

Keeping a positive attitude

It is important to maintain a positive mindset throughout the process and requesting feedback or advice, even after a rejection, can help you recognise why a company is not the right match for you or what you could improve in your application next time. Tenacity is your greatest asset and learning to refine your approach and believing in your potential will grow your self-confidence which will translate in later applications and interviews.
